Player profile

The slightly-built left winger has enjoyed another superb season with Valencia and is reportedly one of the “clever players” wanted at Liverpool by his countryman Fernando Torres.

Mata, who only signed a new contract in November, has also been linked with Barcelona and Tottenham and it is anticipated that Valencia would sell him for the right price as they need to service massive debts.

He has been with Valencia since he left Real Madrid in 2007 without having made a first-team appearance for the club and was first named in Spain’s senior squad for a friendly against Chile in November 2008, but had to wait until the following March for his debut.

Mata can write his own headlines – he studied journalism at university in Madrid while on the books of Real.
