A right-winger with guile and blistering pace, Navas has long been considered one of Spanish football’s most promising players but has been held back by chronic homesickness. He suffers from anxiety attacks when away from home for extended periods and has been forced to leave training camps on several occasions in the past.
Navas has played the best football of his career in the last year, scoring in the final as Sevilla won the Spanish Cup and helping them qualify for the Champions League.
He turned down a move to Chelsea after Sevilla beat Middlesbrough in the 2005 Uefa Cup final, citing a fear of living abroad, but has recently been linked with Real Madrid, whose defender Sergio Ramos said he would choose Navas over established France star Franck Ribery.
His former youth coach, Pablo Blanco, once described Navas’s style of play as “the very embodiment of exquisite finery”.
