Spain’s 6ft 3 ins Under-21 captain, who has been likened to a young Xabi Alonso, has been promoted to the senior set-up for the first time for the World Cup and made his debut as a 75th-minute substitute in the narrow victory over Saudi Arabia in May.
He has been the driving force in Bilbao’s midfield in the four years since he joined the club as a 17-year-old. Reported admirers such as Liverpool, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona are likely to have to meet a €30m (£26m) buyout clause.
Bilbao bought Martinez for more than £5m in 2006, despite the fact he had only played in the third division. He had spent seven years at Osasuna, playing 32 third-tier matches for the reserve side in 2005/06.
