Pique missed out on an unprecedented third Champions League title in as many seasons when Barcelona were knocked out in the semi-finals by Inter Milan.
The central defender scored late in the second leg with a glorious turn and composed finish, and his elegance and confidence on the ball have earned him the nickname ‘Piquenbauer’ in his homeland - after the legendary German Franz Beckenbauer.
Pique came of age during Barcelona’s treble-winning season of 2008/09, having returned to the club he had left as a 17-year-old to join Manchester United.
Pique’s grandfather was a Barcelona director and so it was hardly surprising when he enrolled at the club’s academy aged 10. Ironically, Pique’s maternal family surname is Bernabeu, the stadium name of arch rivals Real Madrid.
