Player profile

The central defender set a world record of 50 successive international appearances without defeat when he played as a substitute in the 3-2 win against Saudi Arabia in May, surpassing the tally of Brazilian Garrincha set in 1966.

Marchena was named in Uefa’s Team of the Tournament after starting five games at Euro 2008, but has since lost his place to the younger Gerard Pique.

He has been with Valencia since 2001 but reports in Spain claim the club will listen to offers for their captain, who is out of contract next summer and was restricted to 17 league starts in a 2009/10 season disrupted by hamstring and thigh injuries.

Marchena started his career at hometown club Sevilla but was sold after their relegation in 2000 to Benfica. A year later he returned to Spain with Valencia, and has since won two league titles, the Spanish Cup, UEFA Cup and European Super Cup.
