The athletic centre-back was a regular in qualifying alongside Cho Yong-hyung. He left South Korea after winning the league and cup double with Suwon Bluewings in 2008, joining J-League side Kyoto Sanga, before switching to Kashima Antlers one season later. The 30-year-old has a surprisingly good goalscoring record.
He netted five goals for Kyoto in 2009, and scored three times in eight J-League games this year before joining up with the Korean squad.
He was given his debut in a World Cup qualifier against North Korea in March 2008, a game held in neutral Shanghai because the North refused to fly the South’s flag or play their anthem.
