Birsa joined Auxerre last summer after an initial six-month loan spell and played in all but three of their league games as they finished third, although he only completed 90 minutes on eight occasions. He can play on the wing or off a centre forward.
He was initially hailed as the new golden boy of Slovenian football after making his international debut aged 19. He did not score in his first 27 internationals but broke his duck with goals in successive qualifying wins over Poland and Slovakia. They came either side of the friendly defeat at Wembley last September, in which Birsa felt Slovenia had “matched England”.
Birsa scored 19 goals in 35 games for Slovenian champions Gorica as a 19-year-old in 2005/06 to earn a move to France, first with Sochaux (eight goals in 66 league appearances) and then Auxerre.
