Matavz is a wildcard selection by Slovenia coach Matjaz Kek. The young forward was uncapped when named in the World Cup squad but he had an excellent season in the Dutch top flight with Groningen.
He scored 13 times in 32 league games, as well as twice in three cup matches and once more in an end-of-season Europa League play-off, which Groningen lost to Utrecht on away goals.
The 6ft 2in striker extended his contract with Groningen in February until 2012. He says he is happy to continue his development at the club despite reports he is being watched by Valencia, Stuttgart and a host of English sides. Matavz made his debut for Groningen in September 2007 but was loaned to Second Division Emmen for much of the 2008/09 season. He started his career with Slovenian club Gorica at the age of 17, scoring 11 goals in 27 games in his debut season.
