Pecnik scored the 88th-minute goal in Russia that helped clinch Slovenia’s qualification, as they went on to win the two-legged World Cup play-off on the away goals rule.
Pecnik has been used as a substitute in six of his first seven international appearances, including in the friendly defeat to England last September when he turned Glen Johnson and crossed for Zlatan Ljubijankic to score.
His only start of the qualification campaign was in the 5-0 win over San Marino. He joined Portuguese club Nacional last summer and has helped them to finish seventh, although 10 of his 24 appearances came as a substitute.
Pecnik previously played 120 league matches in Slovenia’s top flight for Celje, with 14 of his 20 goals coming in 2007/08 when he was the club’s top scorer.
He subsequently rejected offers from Leicester City and Queen’s Park Rangers to join Sparta Prague on loan, but returned six months later after playing only 66 minutes in the Czech First Division. A former Under-21 international captain, he was sent off for two bookable offences against England’s Under-21 side in August 2008.
