Player Profile
The forward nicknamed Supernova was Slovenia’s top scorer in qualifying with five goals but he picked up a groin injury during the pre-World Cup training camp, although it is not expected to keep him out of the opening match.
Novakovic scored 20 league goals to fire Cologne into the German top flight in 2008 and has just finished as the club’s top scorer for the third successive year. Nonetheless, he was stripped of the captaincy in November after delaying his return to Germany in order to join in Slovenia’s World Cup celebrations.
Success has not come quickly for Novakovic. He worked his way up from the lowest ranks of Austrian football to join Liteks Lovech of Bulgaria in 2005, before earning a move to Cologne in 2006.
