Player Profile

This year the 6ft 4in central defender finally made 20-plus league appearances in a season for the first time in his nine-year career but his club, Grenoble, finished bottom of the French top flight. He has promised Wayne Rooney an “unpleasant experience” at the World Cup after accusing the England forward of diving for a penalty and deliberately injuring his ankle in September’s Wembley friendly.

He made 24 appearances on loan at West Brom from Marseille in the promotion-winning 2007-08 season. He initially impressed but only played twice after gifting the winning goal to Barnsley in February when caught in possession, and Albion’s then-manager Tony Mowbray decided against making the move permanent. Generally composed with good distribution, and relishes a physical tussle.

Cesar joined Marseille from Croatian club Dynamo Zagreb in August 2005 but suffered a fractured skull during a game against Metz the following February and only played seven more league games for the club before his transfer to Grenoble in January 2009.
