Vittek is a hardworking and willing striker who struggled during qualifying, failing to net in nine appearances. He captained the Slovaks before handing over the armband to Marek Hamsik for the final game in Poland, which he watched from the bench.
If he can find his shooting boots he may replace Szilard Nemeth as Slovakia’s top scorer - the former Middlesbrough striker netted 22 times at international level.
Vittek missed the final few weeks of the Turkish season with a knee injury but recovered in time to make the Slovakian squad. He joined Ankaragucu on loan in February, linking up with fellow Slovak Marek Sapara, after struggling to score for Lille.
Since leaving Slovan Bratislava in 2004, Vittek has enjoyed only one prolific season at club level - he netted 16 Bundesliga goals for FC Nurnberg in 2005/06, but has scored only 17 league goals in the subsequent four seasons. He joined Lille in 2008 but was mainly used as a substitute during his first season in France.
