Player profile

He may be 6ft 4in tall, but in some ways he is Paraguay’s equivalent to Lionel Messi - unstoppable for his Iberian club side, but unable to reproduce that form at international level. Some fans criticised his performances for the Guarani in qualifying, but the absence of Salvador Cabanas means he may play a big role.

He netted 38 goals (26 in the league) as Benfica won both the Portuguese title and league cup in 2009/10, topping the scoring charts in Portugal. He has netted 56 goals in 84 league games for Benfica, reportedly attracting interest from a number of clubs, including Manchester City.

The left-footer is an expert free-kick taker, and drilled a 20-yarder past Liverpool’s Pepe Reina in Benfica’s Europa League loss at Anfield this season.

The lanky striker is nicknamed Tacuara, which means ‘Big Cane’ in Guarani, the indigenous language of Paraguay. Previously with 3 de Febrero and Nacional, he joined Benfica after an impressive year with Argentine side Newell’s Old Boys.
