Player Profile

The attacking midfielder missed the last seven months of the season because of foot and knee injuries. He underwent surgery to treat a problem in his right knee, making his comeback in the 2-0 win against Greece on 2 June.

Given Paraguay’s shortage of creative midfielders, Gerardo Martino needs the Atalanta player, who often plays on the flanks for the national side, fully fit in South Africa.

Should he line up against Italy on 14 June it will be his first competitive game since a 1-0 loss at Livorno on 28 October 2009. He feels the Italian media have underestimated Paraguay, vowing “we will make them respect us… Italy have a solid defence but lack something in midfield and attack.”

The younger brother of third-choice keeper Diego Barreto, Edgar preferred playing in goal until his teenage years. He helped Paraguay win Olympic silver in 2004 along with his sibling. At the 2006 World Cup he played the final nine minutes against Sweden and started against Trinidad and Tobago.

Barreto has been playing in Europe since 2003, when he left Cerro Porteño to join Dutch side NEC Nijmegen. In 2007 he moved on to Reggina, where he was again a regular starter. Barreto joined Atalanta last summer but his injury problems meant he could contribute little to the club’s unsuccessful relegation battle.
