Player profile

The hugely experienced defender heads to his fourth World Cup having been coaxed out of international retirement by Gerardo Martino. He is set to become only the second Paraguayan to pass 100 caps, following in the footsteps of defender Carlos Gamarra, who won 110).

Now playing in the Mexican second division, he is no longer an automatic starter for Paraguay but his versatility is highly valued. The only survivor from France 98 (Jose Chilavert quit in 2003, Gamarra in 2006), he played in every game at the last three tournaments, including substitute appearances.

In 1998 he featured as both a left wing-back and midfielder, playing the latter position as a substitute in the 1-0 loss to France in the last 16. He filled in at left-back and left wing-back in 2002, but switched to the right flank in 2006, in a tournament during which he was denied what would have been his second international goal. He netted against Trinidad and Tobago but the match officials incorrectly ruled he had handled in the build-up.

He prefers playing centre-back but is too short to play that role at the top level, and will instead feature at full-back or as a defensive midfielder in South Africa.

Last year he captained Paraguayan side Nacional to their first league title since 1946. Now with Leon, he has previously played for Olimpia, Lanus, Santos Laguna, Cruz Azul and Atlas.
