Player Profile

The centre-back joined Wigan in May for an undisclosed fee after impressing in a two-year stint with Belgian side Club Bruges.

A relatively recent addition to the Paraguay squad, Alcaraz’s aerial ability could be useful in South Africa. Unlike many of his international team-mates, he stands over 6ft 1in (1.87m) tall.

He started playing part-time with Paraguayan minnows Teniente, combining his football with work as an apprentice mason. His agent persuaded him to move to Argentine side Racing Club, where he caught the eye of Fiorentina. However, after a just a month in Italy the club folded, and he returned to Paraguay.

He spent six months without a club before resurrecting his career with Beira Mar. He played for the Portuguese side for five years, captaining them in his final season. A regular in his two years with Club Bruges, he helped them finish second in the Jupiler League in 2009/10.
