Ri has firmly established himself as the undisputed number one of the North Korean team. He missed just one of their 16 qualifying matches and kept a phenomenal 10 clean sheets.
In all, he conceded just six goals in 15 appearances. He was nominated for the 2009 Asian Player of the Year award. After starring in the 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia, a result which booked their place in South Africa, he said: “I felt like I was defending the gateway to my motherland.”
Last summer he set himself a specific target to improve his game by the time the World Cup kicks off. “At the moment, I would evaluate myself as three out of five,” he said. By the time the World Cup starts, I aim to be five out of five.”
Not the most commanding of keepers when dealing with high balls, he relies on razor-sharp reflexes and he is an excellent shot-stopper. He likes to play in tracksuit bottoms.
