Player profile

Nam is a vastly experienced left-sided defender who was key to North Korea’s superb defensive displays as they qualified for only their second-ever World Cup finals. He shared the captaincy duties of the side during their qualifying campaign with Hong Yong-Jo.

He was a stalwart of the qualifying campaign for the 2006 World Cup, but he won just two of the nine matches he played in. During a crucial home match with Iran in 2005, which North Korea lost 2-0, Nam was sent off in the 85th minute prompting an unprecedented riot from the locals who pelted the pitch with rocks, bottles and chairs.

Has proved to be very nervous when facing the media. During a press conference back in October he responded to a question about the format of the North Korean league by saying: “For this type of question, you should ask a representative from the federation.”
