Player Profile

North Korea’s captain and playmaker is the only man in the squad with experience of European football having played for Serbia’s FK Benzanija and his current club, Russian side FK Rostov.

He scored his first goal in the Russian Premier League in only his third appearance against the mighty CSKA Moscow. He played 16 matches in the 2008 season, scoring two goals and made 14 appearances in the 2009 season, getting on the scoresheet once.

Although he is not a regular starter at club level, he in an integral part of the national set-up and scored four goals in qualifying for South Africa. He is also the country’s penalty taker.

Loved by coach Kim for his versatility, he can play as an out-and-out striker, as an attacking midfielder or as a winger. He is renowned for his trademark through balls and incisive, accurate crosses to the head of Jong Tae-se. His performances saw him nominated for the 2009 Asian Player of the Year award.
