Taiwo is a full-back with a reputation for thunderous free-kicks. He helped Marseille win the French league and league cup in 2009/10. He will compete with Elderson Echiejile for the left-back spot in South Africa. He lost his place to Echiejile after the opening defeat to Egypt at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations.
Taiwo impressed at the Fifa Under-20 World Cup in 2005, where Nigeria lost in the final to Argentina. He was voted the third-best player at the tournament behind John Mikel Obi and winner Lionel Messi.
The defender had already made his senior debut by that point, having played in a friendly defeat in South Africa in 2004. Later that year he joined Marseille, having previously had trials in Belgium.
