Player profile

Yakubu started ahead of Obafemi Martins at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations despite disappointing form for Everton - he scored only six times in 36 games in 2009/10. ‘The Yak’ ruptured his Achilles tendon in November 2008 and has yet to recapture his best form for David Moyes’ side.

The striker became Everton’s record signing when he joined from Middlesbrough for £11.25m in 2007, although that honour now belongs to Marouane Fellaini. His first season on Merseyside was a huge success – his tally of 21 goals made him the first Evertonian to reach the 20-goal mark since Peter Beardsley in 1991/92.

Yakubu caught the eye of English scouts with his goal against Manchester United for Israeli club Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League in 2002. He joined Portsmouth on loan for the end of the 2002/03 season before signing permanently.

After scoring 35 goals in 81 league games, he moved to Middlesbrough for £7.5m in 2005. The striker hit 35 goals in 103 appearances for Boro.
