Player Profile

The left-footed defensive midfielder captained AZ Alkmaar to the 2008/09 league title and was also captain of the Netherlands side that won the 2006 U21 European Championships.

Schaars is playing in his first senior international tournament – he was part of a 25-man Dutch squad ahead of the 2006 World Cup but failed to make the cut, while injury cost him any hope of featuring at Euro 2008.

Schaars began his career with Vitesse Arnham in 2003 before moving to AZ two years later. He missed the entire 2007/08 season through injuries, but returned in style to captain then-manager Louis van Gaal’s side to the 2008/09 Eredivisie title. The club struggled this season, however, and could only manage a fifth place finish.

His current AZ deal is due to expire in the summer of 2012 but he has been quoted as saying he wants to move on after the World Cup.
