Player Profile

The left-footed centre back played more minutes than any other member of the Dutch squad in World Cup qualifiers and has missed just one qualifying match in two consecutive campaigns.

Mathijsen came through the youth system at Willem II, making his debut in Feb 1999 against Utrecht. He joined Alkmaar in 2004 where he helped the club finish third in the league in 2005 and runner-up in 2006.

Following the 2006 World Cup he moved to Hamburg for £5m and wrote his name in the history books when scoring his first league goal for Hamburg and the club's 2500th of all time in a match against Stuttgart.

He has expressed an interest in playing in England or Spain but is contracted to Hamburg until the summer of 2012.
