Player Profile
Highly-rated attacking midfielder who can play centrally or on either flank, he has spent his entire career at PSV. Of Moroccan descent, Afellay was first called up to the national side by Marco van Basten in 2005 but had to wait until 2007 for his debut against Slovenia. He was part of Holland’s Euro 2008 squad, where he was used mostly as a substitute.
The 24-year-old hit four goals in 29 games for PSV this season as they finished third. He made his PSV debut as a 17-year-old and has been a regular in the starting XI for the last five seasons. In March he was handed a four-match suspension for striking Ajax’s Eyong Enoh in the stomach during PSV’s 4-1 defeat in Amsterdam.
His current deal runs out in 2011 and he says he has no plans to sign a new contract, so PSV may be tempted to cash in this summer.
Ronald Koeman once compared him to Dutch legend Johan Cruyff and Arsene Wenger has reportedly had him scouted 15 times.
