A tricky left-footer who can operate on the wing or as an attacking midfielder, Elia could have a big impact for the Dutch after an impressive debut season at Hamburg.
He won his first Holland cap in September when he came off the bench to inspire a 3-0 friendly win over Japan, and scored his first international goal in only his second appearance after coming on as a late substitute against Scotland in September, his only appearance in qualifying.
He needed surgery on his ankle in March and missed six weeks of the season, putting his World Cup place in doubt.
Elia signed his first professional contract with ADO Den Haag, making his first-team debut at 17. After falling out with coach Lex Schoenmaker he moved on to FC Twente in 2007, blossoming under Steve McClaren in his second season and picking up the Dutch Talent of the Year award in 2009.
Last summer he joined Hamburg for £7m and has been one of the stars of this season’s Bundesliga, hitting five goals in 24 games as the German club finished seventh and reached the Europa League semi-finals.
