Player Profile
Ooijer can play at centre-back but is also comfortable at right-back. He will be travelling to his third World Cup – he started all four games in 2006 but was a non-playing member in 1998. The 35-year-old also played all but one of Holland’s games at Euro 2008, but missed Euro 2000 with a broken leg and was overlooked for Euro 2004. The World Cup final will be played on his 36th birthday.
Ooijer came through the Ajax youth system but moved on before making a first-team appearance. After impressing at Volendam and Roda JC, he moved to PSV in 1997 and flourished following the arrival of Guus Hiddink in 2002. At PSV, Ooijer won five league titles and one domestic cup.
He joined Blackburn in 2006 for £2m but after three seasons at Rovers returned to Eindhoven last summer. He had a shocking start to life in the Premier League – he conceded three penalties and scored an own goal in his first nine appearances for Blackburn.
Ooijer is married to the daughter of Willy van de Kerkhof, who played for Holland in the 1978 World Cup final.
