Player profile

A veteran of two World Cups, the 37-year-old keeper was a surprise call-up but is a favourite of Mexico boss Javier Aguirre and brings plenty of experience. Perez was Aguirre's first-choice goalkeeper when he was last in charge, during Mexico's 2002 World Cup campaign, and was an unused squad member at France 98.

In 1996 he scored a goal for the Mexico Under-23 side in a friendly match against South Korea. Perez made his professional debut for Cruz Azul in 1993 and was at the club for 15 years, making over 400 appearances and winning the winter league title in 1997.

He spent the 2008/09 season on loan at fellow top-flight side Tigres de la UANL, joining Jaguares in 2009. Standing just 5ft 7in tall (1.71m), he is nicknamed ‘El Conejo’ (the Rabbit) for his agility and his impressive leaping ability.
