The tall centre-back had fallen out of favour with coach Javier Aguirre but may have forced his way back into the starting XI thanks to an impressive season at PSV Eindhoven.
At 6ft 3in (1.91m) he is one of the tallest members of the Mexico squad and is good in the air, although less skilful on the ground, and struggles against quick strikers. He made one appearance at the 2006 World Cup.
Rodriguez made his debut for Guadalajara in October 2002. He made over 140 appearances for the club in six seasons and clinched the Apertura (opening) title with them in 2006/07. PSV brought him to Europe ahead of the 2008/09 season to reunite him with countryman and former Chivas team-mate Carlos Salcido.
The News of the World reported in May that Harry Redknapp is keen to bring the 28-year-old to Tottenham ahead of next season. Rodriguez is nicknamed ‘Maza’ after his home town of Mazatlan and a Spanish word for sledgehammer.
