‘Sasa’ is a robust attacking left-back with a reputation as an unshakeable man-marker. He is right-footed but has always played on the left side. The 30-year-old played all four matches for his country at the 2006 World Cup.

An amateur until 20 and an unknown second division footballer until the age of 23, Salcido is now a mainstay of the national side. He joined PSV in 2006 from Mexican club Guadalajara and won back-to-back Dutch league titles in his first two seasons.

As a youth he tried to the enter the US illegally on three separate occasions but was caught and deported each time, finally giving up and returning to his native Guadalajara, where he worked in factories and carpentry shops until he became a professional footballer.
