Player Profile
Guardado is a talented left winger who has been a big success in Spain since signing for Deportivo La Coruna in 2007. Known as the ‘Little Prince’, he is fast, has great vision and loves a long-range shot.
Big things are expected of him in South Africa, but there are doubts over his fitness - he tore knee ligaments in January and then injured his groin in April, missing the end of the La Liga season as a result.
A key player in qualifying, appearing in 16 of Mexico’s 18 matches, Guardado made his international debut in December 2005, just four months after his league debut for club FC Atlas, and was part of the 2006 World Cup squad.
He left Mexico for Spanish club Deportivo in 2007 for €7m (£5.8m), a record amount for a Mexican player at the time, and has scored 10 La Liga goals in 81 appearances.
His contract in Spain runs until 2012 but he admits he may be on the move this summer. “Next season it's likely that I won't play here… everyone knows the club are going through a tough time economically and that they need finances.” Premier League clubs Aston Villa and Tottenham have been linked with the winger.
