Player Profile
Bautista is a mercurial playmaker travelling to his first World Cup finals after being overlooked in 2002 and 2006. A controversial figure, he has reportedly fallen out with several managers in the past, including current boss Javier Aguirre, and was apparently booed by his own fans when Mexico faced Chile in May’s final warm-up match on home soil.
Bautista made his debut as an 18-year-old for Tesco UAG and has since played for Morelia, Pachuca, Jaguares de Chiapas and is currently enjoying his second spell at Chivas. He has won two league titles and made close to 300 Primera Division appearances. He is known as ‘Bofo’, a nickname he has had since he was a child.
‘Bofo’ may well have been travelling to South Africa regardless of whether he was selected in Aguirre’s squad - a Mexican newspaper reported a few weeks ago that the 31-year-old had won a World Cup trip for two in a competition run by the Mexican branch of a British bank.
