A versatile defender who can play anywhere along the backline and also in midfield, Konno is a favourite of Takeshi Okada and played under the Japan coach at Consadole Sapporo.
He was part of the Japan side that reached the 2003 Under-20 World Cup quarter-finals and the 2004 Athens Olympics team, making his senior debut under Zico in 2005.
The tough tackler started his career at Consadole Sapporo in 2001, suffering relegation to the second division in 2002. After failing to win promotion the following season, the heavily indebted club sold him to FC Tokyo before the 2004 season, where he has won the J-League Cup twice. He started every game in the 2009 season as Tokyo finished fifth.
