Player Profile

Japan’s number one goalkeeper will be competing in his fourth World Cup, although he was an unused substitute in 1998 and 2006.

He has spent much of his international career competing with Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi but reclaimed the number one shirt following a defeat by Bahrain in March 2008.

At one time reportedly the highest-paid player in the J-League, Narazaki started his career at Yokohama Flugels in 1995 before moving to Nagoya Grampus in 1999 and has been named in the J-League best XI four times (1996, 1998, 2003, 2008). He missed 10 weeks of the season last year with a broken finger but returned to help Grampus finish ninth.

Narazaki kept goal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and was applauded for his bravery after playing on with a broken nose against the USA, keeping goal in the penalty shoot-out with cotton wool stuffed in his nose to stop the bleeding. He also broke his jaw in a J-League match in 1999.
