Player profile

A solid all-rounder who is likely to start in the centre of Japan’s midfield, Hasebe is praised for his tireless running and dribbling abilities and has improved his defensive game since moving to Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in 2007, helping the club win the league title in 2009.

Although he made his Japan debut in early 2006, he failed to make the cut for Zico’s World Cup squad.

Hasebe made his professional debut for Urawa Reds in 2003 and in his five seasons with the club won the Asian Champions League (2007), the league title (2006), two Emperor’s Cups (2005, 2006) and the J-League Cup (2003).

In 2007 he moved to Europe with Wolfsburg (65 league appearances, two goals) and has just been rewarded with a new two-year deal, possibly in a bid to ward off rumoured interest from the Premier League. His idol is Liverpool and England star Steven Gerrard.
