Singled out by coach Takeshi Okada as Japan’s key man, the powerfully-built attacking midfielder has enjoyed a meteoric rise since moving to Europe with Dutch side VVV-Vevlo and now CSKA Moscow.
A free-kick specialist with a powerful shot, Honda was recently described by one Japanese tabloid as “a missile comparable to Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo”.
Honda moved to VVV-Venlo in 2007 after four seasons at Nagoya Grampus. Although the Dutch club were relegated from the Eredivisie at the end of his first season, Honda hit 16 goals in 36 matches the following season as the club won the second division title and returned to the top flight.
In January, CSKA Moscow paid £5.1m to bring him to Russia. He became the first Japanese player to reach the Champions League quarter-finals when his winning free-kick against Sevilla fired CSKA into the last eight for the first time in their history.
