Player Profile

Matsui is blessed with great technique, speed and dribbling ability and provides a useful attacking option.

Since moving to France in 2004 he has often been overlooked by Japan managers and was left out of Zico’s 2006 squad, but he is a regular under Takeshi Okada and featured in nine of their 14 qualifiers.

The skilful midfielder spent four years at Kyoto Sanga before joining French side Le Mans in 2004, going on to score 15 goals in 119 appearances and helping the club win promotion to Ligue 1 in his first season.

After four successful years at the club he had a disappointing year at Saint-Etienne before moving to Japanese-owned Grenoble ahead of the 2009/10 season. He featured 29 times as the club finished bottom of the table and were relegated.
