Player Profile

Uchida made his debut as a 19-year-old in 2008 in coach Takeshi Okada’s first game in charge and has been an ever-present at right-back since. Like Yuto Nagatomo at left-back, he has plenty of pace and is encouraged to get forward.

Uchida will join Bundesliga runners-up Schalke for £1.1m after the World Cup, where he will earn a record wage for a Japanese player according to reports.

The highly-rated full-back made his J-League debut as a 17-year-old in 2006 and has won the last three league titles with Kashima Antlers. He has already racked up more than 100 league appearances for the club and was named in the J-League best XI in 2008 and 2009.

A member of the Beijing Olympics side, he was also part of the Japan team that reached the last 16 of the Under-20 World Cup in 2007. His only international goal came against Bahrain in June 2008.

The 22-year-old battled through vomiting attacks last season that were believed to be stress related as he helped Kashima to a third consecutive league title. Chewing gum has made the nausea go away.
