Gervinho’s real name is Gervais Yao Kouassi and he began his career at ASEC Mimosas where he was given the Brazilian style nickname he uses today, which is derived from his name Gervais.
Joined Belgian side Beveren in 2005 where he attracted the attention of Arsenal, but he instead moved to French side Le Mans after two seasons and then on to Lille in the summer of 2009, where he has since shone in Ligue 1 and the Europa League.
One of the most exciting Ivorian prospects to emerge in recent years, Gervinho made only three appearances, all as a substitute, in qualifying for South Africa but still scored twice. He had previously captained his country at the 2008 Olympics.
Two-footed and comfortable playing in any attacking role, his main attributes are his dribbling ability and raw pace. Such has been the speculation linking him to the likes of Bayern Munich and Arsenal (again) that he was forced to issue a statement in April confirming he would be at Lille next season: “I am aware of Wenger following me since the age of 17… He is a great coach and when a great manager appreciates you, it makes you feel confident enough to play at the highest level,” he said.
