The Anderlecht defender played an important part in the qualifiers but was injured for the crucial last match in El Salvador. He spent an anxious night following the game on the internet and on the phone to Honduras.
Just seven league appearances for the Belgian champions last season put his World Cup place in doubt.
“In Honduras nobody understands why I don’t play and I dont understand either,” he was quoted as saying.
Bernandez is upbeat about his team’s chances in South Africa: “The current side is the best in the history of Honduran football,” he said. “We all want to play a big team to show the whole world that we haven’t come to South Africa on holiday.”
