Canales was the third-choice goalkeeper who was given a rare chance in the April friendly against Venezuela but was at fault for the goal which resulted in a 1-0 defeat.
He also played all 90 minutes in the recent World Cup warm-up friendly against Azerbaijan, keeping a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw.
He has done well this season for his domestic club Motagua, who topped the league standings but lost the title after a two-legged final against Olimpia.
While the Honduran press have been debating whether Noel Valladares or Donis Escober should start in South Africa, Canales insists he is not resigned to watching from the touchline. “I want to make the manager’s job difficult,” he said.
