The diminutive left-back replaced the injured Vasileios Torosidis for the play-off games against Ukraine and played well, booking his place on the place to South Africa. Spiropoulos, who has established himself with Greek giants Panathinaikos since joining from Panionios in 2008, is considered one of the more creative players in boss Otto Rehhagel’s squad.
The 26-year-old was part of the Greek squad at Euro 2008, where he started the final group game against Spain. It was his only appearance of the tournament.
