The versatile defender enjoyed a successful season with double winners Panathinaikos, but is expected to provide cover in South Africa. His preferred role is at centre-back, although he can also play in either full-back position.

Sometimes considered error-prone, he scored an own goal in the Champions League qualifying defeat by Atletico Madrid last August. He was sent off in his next game, the 2-0 loss to Switzerland in qualifying.

A no-nonsense defender, he is unlikely to try anything too fancy while in possession but could be a threat from set pieces. He made one appearance at Euro 2008, starting the final group game against Spain after Greece had already been eliminated.

Born in the Czech Republic to a Czech father and Greek mother, he moved to Greece aged nine and has spent his entire career there.
