Player profile

Boateng qualifies to play for Ghana through his father, Prince. He was born in the tough Wedding district of Berlin and came through Hertha Berlin’s youth academy. His performances for the first team were noticed by Tottenham Hotspur and he signed for the London club for £5.4m in 2007. It proved to be a frustrating time at White Hart Lane, so he went back to the Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund on loan.

In the summer of 2009 he was signed by Portsmouth and was one of their best players in a traumatic season as financial troubles enveloped the club. Although he enjoyed an excellent year, he will always be remembered for missing a penalty in the FA Cup final in what was likely to be his last game for the club as he is set to be one of the first players to leave the Pompey this summer.

His half-brother Jerome has been named in the Germany squad
