Pantsil’s World Cup hopes looked to be in tatters after he damaged his posterior cruciate ligament while playing for Fulham against Chelsea in December, but he returned to the first team in late April. He played in the Cottagers’ triumphant Europa League semi-final second leg tie against Hamburg, but was surprisingly dropped for the final against Atletico Madrid.
A real fans’ favourite at Craven Cottage since his arrival in 2008, he does a now famous post-match lap of honour. He previously had spells playing in Poland and Israel before he moved to West Ham in 2004, where he was recommended to then Hammers boss Alan Pardew by Yossi Benayoun, who had seen him play for Hapoel Tel Aviv and Maccabi Tel-Aviv.
He is another graduate of the side which took silver at the World Under-20 Championship in 2001 and he soon made his full debut for the national side along with John Mensah.
He celebrates his 29th birthday two days after Ghana’s opening World Cup match against Serbia. He insists his surname is actually spelt Paintsil (which is used on his Ghana shirt). Fulham use the name Pantsil because it is what appears on all of his official UK documentation and work permits.
