This imposing centre-back grabbed his chance with both hands when an injury crisis pressed him into service at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations. He was outstanding for the Black Stars and fully justified the reputation he had built for himself at Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.
He arrived in Germany from Ghanaian side Asante Kotoko in 2007, where he had won the Defender of the Year award for his displays in the top flight. He was part of the Hoffenheim team that stunned German football by topping the Bundesliga for much of the 2008/09 season before finally slipping away.
He has been strongly linked with a £5m switch to Premier League side Stoke City. He is 6ft 5in tall and is equally at home playing as a defensive midfielder.
