Team profile
The Bison is out but the future of the Black Stars burns bright. On 27 May the inevitable was confirmed and Michael 'The Bison' Essien was ruled out of the World Cup, depriving Ghana of their totem and driving force. The news prompted much consternation, but their group of phenomenally-talented youngsters might just help soften the blow in South Africa. Ghana's stand-ins, consisting of members of the team that won the Under-20 World Cup against Brazil in October, stood-up to be counted and helped propel them to the final.
Ghana have players spread across Europe's top leagues and can boast a Champions League winner in the combustible Sulley Muntari of Inter Milan. They will draw on the memories of their World Cup debut in 2006 where they enjoyed two group stage wins before being outclassed by Brazil. They fear nobody and have every chance of progressing with Group D looking wide open.
