Player Profile
Standing an imposing 6ft 5ins tall, Mertesacker’s quality is underlined by some impressive statistics – he was statistically the best tackler at the 2006 World Cup, winning 83.3% of his challenges.
As a youth, he was coached by his father Stefan at Hannover 96 and in recent seasons has been a mainstay of Werder Bremen’s defence, helping them to two cup finals last year, the Uefa Cup which they lost and the German Cup, which they won.
He first established himself for Germany at the 2005 Confederations Cup and was close to goalkeeper Robert Enke, carrying a wreath at his funeral after Enke tragically committed suicide in November last year.
Mertesacker worked at a centre for handicapped people during his apprenticeship with Hannover 96 and has since established his own charitable foundation that helps amateur sportsmen and the poor.
