Player profile

Friedrich hopes the World Cup will help banish the memories of a wretched season for Hertha Berlin that saw them finish rock bottom of the Bundesliga.

As a result of their relegation, he looks set to end his eight-year stay at Hertha, with Hamburg and Wolfsburg reportedly waiting in the wings.

Won first cap for Germany after only two Bundesliga appearances but was a key figure at the Euro 2004 and 2008 tournaments and the 2006 World Cup, where he played every game bar the third place play-off, despite never being a favourite of the German media.

Normally a right-back, Joachim Loew decided to move him to centre-back last year, and when he won his 67th cap in September 2009, he became the most capped outfield player for Germany to have never scored a goal for the national side.
