Player Profile
A talented playmaker who many in France consider the natural heir to Zinedine Zidane, Gourcuff is also a free-kick specialist.
He made his debut in August 2008 and was a key player during qualification. His first international goal, a 30-yard equaliser against Romania, was credited with saving coach Raymond Domenech’s job.
Gourcuff made his debut for Rennes as a 17-year-old in 2003 and later moved to Italian giants AC Milan but his time at the San Siro, where he was in direct competition with Brazilian star Kaka, was an unhappy one.
Milan manager Carlo Ancelotti questioned the player’s mental toughness and after only 13 Serie A starts in two seasons he was loaned to Bordeaux at the start of the 2008/09 season, helping them win their first Ligue 1 title since 1999. His move to Les Girondins was made permanent last summer in a £13m deal.
He is the son of Christian Gourcuff, a former professional footballer and current manager of Ligue 1 side Lorient and the World Cup final will take place on his 24th birthday.
