Player Profile

France’s captain and all-time record goalscorer, but Henry has had a season to forget, having been vilified by the media for his handball during the World Cup qualifying play-off against the Republic of Ireland which led to the decisive goal in a 2-0 victory.

He was booed by his own fans during the friendly against Spain in March and his form dipped alarmingly. He finished the domestic season struggling to get a game for Barcelona, sparking rumours he could be on his way to Major League Soccer in the USA.

Henry was France’s top scorer when they won the 1998 World Cup, but had to settle for a place on the bench for the final. He also scored three goals in five games to help Les Bleus win Euro 2000, but his 2002 World Cup was one to forget - he was sent off in France’s second game against Uruguay after just 25 minutes for a dangerous tackle and had to watch the team go out in the group stages.

Henry began his career at Monaco where his talent was nurtured under Arsene Wenger. After winning a French league title with Monaco, he moved to Juventus in January 1999 but failed to settle in Italy.

He joined Arsenal for £11m in August 1999, winning two Premier League titles and three FA Cups under Wenger, while also scoring a club record 226 goals in 364 games. In 2007, he moved to Barcelona and played a prominent role in the Catalan club’s remarkable treble-winning campaign of 2008-09.
